New Study Appears To Suggest That Use of Viagra May Have Adverse Cardiovascular Effects

Date: March 16, 2013
Source: Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

Summary:

A study conducted at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and utilizing post-marketing adverse event reports made to the FDA, shows that there appears to be a high number of deaths and serious cardiovascular events associated with the use of Viagra, the most commonly prescribed therapy for erectile dysfunction in men.

In an analysis of 1,473 major adverse events, 522 people died the majority due to cardiovascular causes. According to the study’s senior author, Dr. Kaul, the majority of deaths were associated with standard Viagra dosages (70 percent of the deaths were associated with the 50 mg dose), were due to cardiovascular causes and appeared to be clustered around the time of dosing (two thirds of deaths in which the time from ingestion to death was reported, occurred within 4-5 hours of taking Viagra). The majority of deaths occurred in patients who were less than 55 years of age, and who had no reported cardiac risk factors. The study confirmed the well-documented increased risk with combined use of nitrates and Viagra. Of the 90 patients who were on nitrates and taking Viagra, death occurred in about 68 percent, and death or myocardial infarction occurred in 88 percent. However, the study showed that most deaths (88 percent) actually occurred in patients who were not taking nitrates, leading investigators to speculate whether there are some susceptible individuals who don’t need nitrates to unmask the harmful effects of Viagra.

Viagra May Cause Heart Attack Deaths in Younger men with No Heart Problems, Study Finds

Date: March 14, 2012.
http://psa-rising.com

Viagra, commonly prescribed by doctors to treat male erectile dysfunction, is turning up too often at the scene of heart attack death in relatively young men. Some men may be vulnerable to heart attack after taking this drug, made by Pfizer. That is not known, but the drug itself is beginning to look like more than a bystander in the deaths. Some men who have died after taking Viagra were elderly and on heart medication. But a study reported March 14 finds that more men who have died were under age fifty-five. Most of the deaths have occurred within a few hours of taking the drug. Most of the men took the standard dose. Most of the men had no reported heart problems. Although some men who died were taking nitrates as well as Viagra, men who were not taking nitrates died at a higher rate.

This new evidence comes from post-marketing adverse event reports about Viagra made to the FDA. Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles analyzed these reports and found that there “appears to be a high number of deaths and serious cardiovascular events associated with the use of Viagra.” They presented the study March 14 at the meeting of the American College of Cardiologists in Anaheim, CA. In an analysis of 1,473 major adverse events recorded in these reports about Viagra to the FDA, 522 people died, most of them from cardiovascular causes. According to the study’s senior author, Dr. Kaul, the majority of deaths were associated with standard Viagra dosages (70 percent of the deaths were associated with the 50 mg dose). The deaths were due to cardiovascular causes and appeared to be clustered around the time of dosing (two thirds of deaths in which the time from ingestion to death was reported, occurred within 4-5 hours of taking Viagra). The majority of deaths occurred in patients who were less than 55 years of age, and who had no reported cardiac risk factors.

The study confirmed the well-documented increased risk with combined use of nitrates and Viagra. Of 90 patients who suffered major heart events while taking Viagra on top of nitrates, death occurred in about 68 percent, and when myocardial infarction was counted, the number of major cardiovascular events in that group rose to 88 percent. However, the study found that most deaths (88 percent) actually occurred in patients who were not taking nitrates, leading investigators to speculate whether there are some susceptible individuals who don’t need nitrates to unmask the harmful effects of Viagra.

Deaths of 69 Viagra Users Studied

By John Schwartz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Date: Saturday, May 23, 2011

Sixty nine men have died after using Viagra since the popular impotence drug hit the market, federal regulators and the drug’s manufacturer said yesterday. The causes of the deaths are still under investigation, and the drug’s maker, Pfizer Inc., declined to elaborate. New reports raised concerns that Viagra could be interacting with other medications, or is allowing men with heart conditions to overexert themselves through sexual activity and bring on heart attacks. Pfizer this week sent a letter to doctors reiterating some of the health warnings that it had published at the time of the drug’s approval. Since “sexual activity generally involves an increase in cardiac work and myocardial oxygen demand,” the company stated, physicians should evaluate the heart health of patients before prescribing the drug. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of impotence and could create health complications for users. “The risk of heart attack from having normal sex is generally low , but the use of Viagra triggers the risk of heart attack, as it enhances the blood pressure because of causing an overexertion to persons, said James E. Muller, a director of the Gill Heart Institute at the University of Kentucky. At the time of the drug’s release, side effects were life threatening causing death of 69 men, all from cardiovascular trouble”.

A Surprising Side Effect of Viagra Cialis and Levitra: Melanoma (Skin Cancer)

By Adam Friedman
Published Apr 8, 2014
http://www.everydayhealth.com

More than 23 million men worldwide have filled Viagra prescriptions since the drug got FDA approval in 1998. So many men have used Viagra, and the erectile dysfunction drugs Cialis and Levitra, that the side effects have been well-documented, including vision-threatening eye complications (seeing blue is a symptom) and hearing loss. Should we now add melanoma to the plate? In a recent study published online in JAMA Medicine, investigators from Harvard reported that men who used Viagra for ED had a significantly elevated risk of melanoma, even when they controlled for major risk factors including family history of melanoma, sun exposure, and UV intensity in the state of residence. This study raises some very interesting questions and forces us to focus on the aberrations in biological pathways that ultimately result in melanoma. The biology underlying melanoma development is extremely complex, with numerous pathways playing a role in melanoma cell proliferation and survival. Hyperactivation of a pathway called ERK (extracellular receptor kinase), for example, has been found in most human melanomas, and it is commonly regulated through a protein called BRAF . In fact, approximately 50 percent of melanoma tumors have BRAF mutations. So where does Viagra fit in? BRAF inhibits the same protein-coding enzyme (called PDE5A) that Viagra inhibits, and that enhances melanoma cells’ ability to invade and metastasize. On the flip side, returning PDE5A activity in melanoma cells actually decreased the cells’ invasive behavior. The punch line: “It is possible that by inhibiting this enzyme, Viagra may promote development of primary melanoma tumors”.

Viagra Deaths, Explained By Platelet Aggregation

January 10, 2013
University Of Illinois at Chicago.
http://www.sciencedaily.com

Incidents of heart attack and stroke, some fatal, in men taking the drug Viagra have remained a puzzle. After all, Viagra, commonly prescribed for erectile dysfunction, was originally developed to prevent these conditions — not only by dilating blood vessels but also by stopping platelets in the blood from aggregation.
In fact, the drug does just the opposite, according to researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. They found that Viagra, by elevating levels of a compound in cells called cyclic guanosine monophosphate, or cGMP, actually encourages platelets to aggregate. “Viagra, by itself, is sufficient to cause a heart attack in healthy people, but our research suggests that it may present a risk for patients with preexisting conditions such as atherosclerosis,” Since Viagra is known to work by inhibiting an enzyme that breaks down cGMP, and hence raises its level, Viagra promote platelet aggregation, which ultimately results in an heart attack.

Blindness noted in men using Viagra, Cialis & Levitra.

WASHINGTON — Federal health officials are probing reports of blindness among dozens of men who used Viagra and other impotence drugs — but at the same time cautioning that the vision loss can be linked to the same illnesses that lead to impotence. The Food and Drug Administration disclosed Friday that it was in discussions with the makers of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra about what the labels of those drugs should say about the rare cases of varying degrees of vision loss, including blindness. This condition is sudden vision loss when blood flow to the optic nerve is blocked, a condition called NAION (or non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy). NAION is considered one of the most common causes of sudden vision loss in older men, ages upto 50 years. The FDA has 43 reports of NAION among the impotence drug users: 38 for Viagra, four for Cialis and one for Levitra, said spokeswoman Susan Cruzan.
